For outstanding achievements in the training of pedagogical staff in 1945, the Decree of the Government of Ukraine was awarded to the Odesa Pedagogical Institute the name of the outstanding scientist-teacher - Konstiantyn Dmytrovych Ushynsky.
In 1970 Odesa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky was awarded with the Honorary Diploma of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
September 29, 1994, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on the basis of Odesa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky created South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky.
In 2007, the staff of the University was awarded by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for the contribution to the development of education, training highly qualified specialists, productive scientific and pedagogical activity and employment gains.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Association of Media Workers of Ukraine recognized the University as the best among the higher educational institutions of the III-IV accreditation levels in the field of training of scientific and pedagogical staff and awarded the 1st degree diploma with the awarding of the gold medal at the All-Ukrainian competition "Higher school-2008".
July 13, 2009 by the Decree of the President of Ukraine the University granted a national status.
As a result of an online survey conducted by the Turkish website www.ukraynahaber.com from January 1 to March 31, 2011, the University, according to foreign citizens’ evaluation, was selected as the best institution of higher education in Ukraine.
In April and November 2011, the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine and the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine awarded the Grand Prix and Gold Medal for winning the competition nominations at the international exhibitions in Kyiv "Education and Career - 2011".
For the effective implementation of the international educational program Intel "Training for the Future", with the assistance of the development of the information society in Ukraine in 2011, the University was awarded a diploma.
In March 2012, for the participation in the 10th Ukrainian Finals of the International Olympiad in Turkish, during which the University team took the 2nd place, was awarded the Diploma of the Main Department of Education and Science of Kyiv City State Administration.
At the exhibition "Contemporary Education in Ukraine-2012" the university received a diploma of the winner for the implementation of the project "International educational programs as a catalyst for informatization of the pedagogical university".
In the course of the XVIII International Exhibition "Contemporary Education in Ukraine - 2013", held in February 2013 in Kyiv, the University was awarded a gold medal in the competition "Informational and communication technologies in education".
In March 2013, according to the results of the competition held by the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Exhibition World Company within the framework of the IV International Exhibition "Modern Education Institutions - 2013", the University received the Grand Prix "The Leader of Scientific and scientific-technical activity" and the certification "The quality of scientific publications" according to the h-index in Scopus.
December 9, 2016, in Kunming, the Educational and Cultural Center "Confucius Institute" of the University was ranked the best among 511 nominees from 140 countries and received the highest award from the Chinese Government - "Confucius Institute of 2016", which was awarded to the Rector Olexii Chebykin personally by Ms. Liu Yandong, Vice Prime Minister of the State Council of the People's Republic of China.
April 24, 2017, the staff of the State Institution "South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky" was awarded the Diploma of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for merits to the Ukrainian people.
May 2017, the staff of the University was awarded the Honorary Diploma by the Odesa City Council for many years of selfless work, high professionalism, significant achievements in scientific and pedagogical activity, a significant contribution to the development of education and science, training of highly skilled specialists and on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the foundation.
May 19, 2017, the Honorary Diploma of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine was awarded to a team of the University for significant achievements in scientific and pedagogical activities, professional training of student youth and on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the institution.
July 19, 2017, the staff of Ushynsky University for the high achievements in ensuring the development of domestic education and science, the achievement of significant success in the scientific and educational sphere, a significant contribution to the creation of spiritual values and high professionalism was awarded by the Honorary Diploma of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
South Ukrainian national pedagogical university named
after K. D. Ushynsky: history and modernity
South Ukrainian national pedagogical university named after Kostiantyn Dmytrovych Ushynsky is one of the oldest educational institutions of Ukraine and the first teaching one on the northern Black Sea coast.
The University started as a Pedagogical Institute which was established pursuant to the Decree of the Emperor Oleksandr the First in Odesa on May, 2, 1817, as a separate structural unit at the Rishelievskyi lyceum.
During 200-year history the University passed a complex way of repeated name changes (the Institute of Teachers, the Institute of People’s Education, Odesa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky, South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky, South Ukrainian national pedagogical university named after K. Ushynsky), liquidations and updates.
Before 1941 the Institute used to be one of the largest in the city by the number of enrolled students. However, during World War II the Institute was evacuated. It was relocated to the city of Bayram-Ali in Turkmen SSR, where it functioned until 1944.
Fifteen hundred students and teachers went to the front, almost seven hundred of which were killed. Three defenders – Vasyl Musin, Volodymyr Morhunenkov and Anatolii Kovalenko were awarded the titles of Hero.
For outstanding achievements in the training of teaching staff in 1945 by the Resolution of the Government of Ukraine the Institute was given the name of the outstanding scientist and teacher – Kostiantyn Dmytrovych Ushynsky.
In 1970 Odesa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. Ushynsky was awarded a diploma of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The modern University is the flagship of pedagogical education in the South of Ukraine, where students, post-graduate students and doctors have been successfully training in 47 specialties and specializations.
Since its establishment more than 100,000 specialists for the educational system of our country and thirty other countries have been trained within its walls.Among its graduates and pedagogues are ministers, deputies of different levels, mayors, heads of large institutions, famous scientists and educators, directors of research institutes, schools, rectors of higher educational institutions, trainers and masters of sports, winners of Olympiads, recognized artists who made an invaluable contribution to the development of education and science worldwide.
The University is composed of 38 departments that are headed by doctors and professors – recognized experts in their fields. About five hundred teachers and twenty foreign specialists work at its departments.
There are twelve academicians, seventy professors, doctors of science among the pedagogues; eighteen teachers have an honourary title “Honoured Worker of Science of Ukraine”, “Honoured Worker of Education of Ukraine”, “Honoured Worker of Culture”, “Honoured Artist of Ukraine”, “Honoured Coach of Ukraine” and are the winners of state awards. A lot of University scholars were presented with international awards, elected to be members of national and international academies, societies and associations.
The most important scientific studies at the University were carried out in the framework of seventeen internationally recognized scientific schools.
The results of the University studies are reflected in printed works – more than two thousand scientific papers are annually published at home and foreign editing houses. Numerous monographs are published in different languages and in cooperation with the scholars of the USA, Israel, China, Great Britain, Lithuania and other countries.
Every year the University supports organizations of more than thirty international and Ukrainian scientific conferences. The University of Ushynsky is a founder of scientific journals in philosophy, political science, sociology, psychology, pedagogy, philology and others.
The University offers seven specialized Doctoral and Candidate Thesis Committees in twelve majors. Each year more than seventy theses are passed. Three hundred Ukrainian and foreign students from fifteen countries take postgraduate and doctorate courses as well as individual academic programs.
Almost three thousand students are involved in scientific work, the results of which are reflected in thousands of articles published every year. The participants of the educational process are winners of almost seventy contests, competitions and various Olympiads of national and international levels.
According to SCOPUS database the University ranks first among pedagogical universities of Ukraine.
The University collaborates with eighty educational and scientific institutions around the world.
There is an International Centre for Distance Learning functioning in association with the University; educational scientific information and culture offices of the State of Israel, the USA, Lithuania, China and Korea develop their work under the support of the University. The establishment is a coordinator of project studies by international programs Tempus, Vyshehrad Fund, the “Ukraine-Norway“ Fund and others).
The University is constantly developing. In recent years there was a significant increase in number of majors and specializations of training graduate, postgraduate and doctoral students. The University has an extensive system of material resources for providing educational process and scientific work. Thus, a modern scientific library was put into operation.
The University provides all necessary conditions for artistic, creative and sports activities of its students who can participate in forty sections and hobby groups.
Significant sporting achievements of the University students and graduates of different years are represented with twenty five Olympic champions, eighty three winners of world and European championships, twenty-eight honoured coaches and masters of sports of Ukraine.
Amateur creative collectives take part in many prestigious competitions and festivals in Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, China, the United States and other countries where they annually win prizes and get the Grand Prix.
Currently, according to different ratings the University is among the leaders of pedagogical and humanities universities and is presented with high awards, namely those of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and others.
About the University
South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky was established as Pedagogical Institute at Richelieu Lyceum in Odesa on 2 May, 1817. Since that time, its name has been changed several times (Teacher’s Institute, Institute of Public Education, Odesa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky, South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky, South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky); it has been liquidated and reestablished. Before 1941, the University was one of the biggest in Odesa in terms of the amount of students and the leading one in the USSR in terms of quality of teachers training. During the World War II, it was the only pedagogical educational institution that was relocated to Turkmenistan by the Resolution of the Government and continued its work there.
By the Resolution of the Government of Ukraine, the University was named after distinguished scientist-educator Kostiantyn Ushynsky for its outstanding service in training teachers.
In 1970, Odesa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky was awarded Certificate of Appreciation of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
On 29 September, 1994, by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 592 and order of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine No. 270 dated 16 September, 1994, Odesa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky was reorganized into South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky.
In 2007, the University personnel was awarded Certificate of Appreciation of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for its considerable contribution to the development of science, training skilled specialists, fruitful research and educational activity as well as work achievements.
On 13 July, 2009, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 538, South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky was assigned the status of a national university and was given its present name.
Currently, the University is a flagship teachers training university of the southern region of Ukraine with 17 acknowledged scholar schools, 62 specialties for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral training programmes at 10 faculties, 4 divisions and one institute. Within the period of its existence, more than 100,000 students have graduated from the University and have been employed at the educational institutions of Ukraine; more than 3000 graduates have worked abroad.
South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky is a member of International Association of Universities, East European Association of Universities, Association of European Universities, International Association of Pedagogical Universities of Central and Eastern Europe, Swedish National Scientific Association, AGEC – “European Association of Choral Communities for Public Activity”, European Council’s Higher Education and Research Committee (Strasburg), Norwegian-Ukrainian University Alliance, a well-known European organization “Observatory of the Magna Charta”. The university collaborates with more than 100 Ukrainian educational institutions and numerous universities in Europe, Asia and America. At present, there are 12 academicians, almost 70 Doctors of Sciences, professors; 18 lecturers educators hold the titles of Honorary Workers of Science, Education, Arts and Sports; they are laureates of state prizes. A great number of scientists have received international awards; they are members of various national and international academies, communities and associations.
The University is proud of its sports achievements: 25 Olympic champions, more than 50 champions and winners of European and World Championships, 29 Honoured Coaches and Masters of Sports of USSR, Ukraine, etc.
The University is well-known far beyond the country; it collaborates with educational and research institutions of various countries. There is International Distance Learning Centre, which is the only one in the south of Ukraine; educational research, information and cultural centres of Israel, Turkey, the USA, Lithuania, People’s Republic of China (Confucius Institute). Lecturers and students participate in more than 30 international projects. The University is a coordinator of project studies according to international programmes TEMPUS, Visegrad Fund, Fund “Ukraine-Norway”, etc.
There are the following structural units belonging to the University:

According to the national ranking of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the university has been among 34 leading pedagogical, humanitarian and sporting universities of Ukraine for more than 10 years. It has been appreciated for its research work, implementation of information technologies, professional orientation; received prestigious awards and medals.
Efficient work of the University is provided by its teaching staff, established traditions, the updating and implementation of advanced teaching technology.
There are almost 500 lecturers together with foreign professors working at 38 departments. Scholar schools established at the University are well-known in Ukraine and abroad for their achievements in the sphere of pedagogy, psychology, physics, mathematics. There are 7 Specialized Academic Councils for defending candidate’s and doctor’s theses in 12 specialties. Postgraduate training programmes are offered in 34 specialties, one can take a doctoral training programme in 11 specialties. The University facilitates holding more than 30 international and all-Ukraine research conferences every year and publishing 6 scholarly journals on a regular basis.
