A round table "European experience of social inclusion: challenges and opportunities for training special education specialists in Ukraine"

On December 11, 2025, in accordance with the work plan of Ushynsky University on the implementation of European integration measures in the educational process for the students of the first (bachelor's) and second (master's) levels of the specialty "Special Education", scientific and pedagogical workers of the Department of Special and Inclusive Education Olha Forostyan, Head of the Department, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Psychological Sciences, Professor; Hanna Sokolova, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine; Iryna Orlenko, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor, held a round table "European Experience of Social Inclusion: Challenges and Opportunities for Training Special Education Specialists in Ukraine".

Also, within the framework of the cooperation agreement, the event was joined by Kateryna Kuchina, a postgraduate student at the Mykola Yarmachenko Institute of Special Pedagogy and Psychology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (scientific supervisor - Professor Hanna Sokolova) with a report "Terminological Differences in Ukrainian and International Speech Therapy: Challenges for Diagnostics, Education and Interdisciplinary Communication".

Professor Olha Forostyan emphasized the importance of developing professional dialogue, exchanging practical experience and understanding modern trends in special education in the context of European integration.

Within the framework of the round table, Professor Hanna Sokolova outlined the main provisions of the topic "Professional Competencies of Teachers in the Context of European Integration: Modern Standards and Development Directions". She focused on key aspects of the formation of professional competence of future teachers, the importance of integrating European standards into the domestic educational space, the introduction of evidence-based practices, the development of an interdisciplinary approach and strengthening the professional mobility of specialists.

Associate Professor Iryna Orlenko also presented her vision of modern trends in inclusive education, revealing the content of the topic “European models of social inclusion: competencies, standards, challenges”. The speech emphasized the need to adapt European inclusive models to Ukrainian realities, which will contribute to improving the quality of educational services for children with special educational needs. The relevance of improving the professional training of teachers and the importance of combining theoretical approaches with applied aspects of inclusive practice were also emphasized.

In her report, Kateryna Kuchina highlighted key aspects of the impact of terminology on the quality of professional activity of specialists. It was revealed why clear and consistent terminology determines the effectiveness of diagnostics, the accuracy of professional communication and the comparability of scientific research in the field of speech therapy. The speaker analyzed the genesis of the Ukrainian terminological system, outlining a number of problematic aspects related to the heterogeneity of terms and differences between scientific schools. Special attention was paid to the interdisciplinary intersection of pedagogy, medicine, psychology and linguistics, which creates both opportunities for the development of terminology and difficulties in its unification.

The event became an important platform for professional discussion, exchange of experience and strengthening cooperation between the scientific community and practitioners in the field of special and inclusive education. It is worth noting that scientists and practitioners from different regions of Ukraine joined the round table, which contributed to a wider presentation of experience and strengthening of national professional dialogue.
