For International Mathematics Day

On March 10, on the eve of International Mathematics Day, the Department of Higher Mathematics and Statistics, together with the Library of Ushynsky University, held a scientific and educational event for the 1st-year students of specialties "Mathematics. Informatics" and "Physics. Mathematics" of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, Informatics and Management. As part of the meeting, the students, together with the teachers of the Department of Higher Mathematics and Statistics Yakovleva Olha Mykolayivna and Olefir Olena Ivanivna, visited the library, where they viewed a unique exhibition of old-printed textbooks on mathematics from the 19th and 20th centuries. Librarian Marynchenko Lada Dmytrivna introduced the students to the evolution of book printing, highlighting the path from Johann Gutenberg's invention of the movable type printing press in the 1440s, which made knowledge accessible to the mass reader, to the appearance of the first mechanized presses in the early 19th century. Particular attention was paid to the period of the second half of the 20th century, when there was a transition from letterpress to offset printing, and later to the introduction of modern digital technologies that allow for instant replication of complex mathematical texts. The demonstration of ancient printing methods and a comparative analysis of the typography of that time with modern publications aroused particular interest among the student youth. Associate Professor Yakovleva Olha Mykolayivna spoke about the history of the International Day of Mathematics, focusing on the fact that UNESCO officially declared March 14 a professional holiday only in 2019. The choice of date is due to its coincidence with Pi Day, since in the "month/day" format this corresponds to the value 3.14; the tradition of celebrating Pi Day dates back to 1988. In addition, March 14 is celebrated as the birthday of the outstanding physicist Albert Einstein. The final stage of the event was a lively discussion, during which the teachers and the students debated the transformation of the language of mathematical symbols over the past two hundred years, and also analyzed the prospects of a paper book in the conditions of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and electronic textbooks.
