The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics

The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was founded on 12 June, 1930. Now it is an important educational and research centre of the South of Odesa region. About 7,000 graduates have become teachers of physics, mathematics, computer science, economics at institutions of general education, higher education and research. More than 50 of them are Honoured Teachers, Honoured Workers of Science and Education of Ukraine; about 100 graduates have become Doctors of Sciences and professors.

The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics provides training of undergraduate, postgraduate students and doctoral candidates. There is a Specialised Academic Council for defending candidate’s theses at the Faculty. Students are trained in such fields of study as “Secondary Education (Physics)”, “Secondary Education (Mathematics)”, “Secondary Education (Computer Science)” with extra specialties in computer science, the English language and literature, physics.

Teaching process is provided by the Departments of Algebra and Geometry; Advanced Mathematics; Applied Mathematics and Computer Science; Physical and Mathematic Modelling, and the Department of Physics. 13 Doctors of Sciences and professors, 40 Candidates of Sciences and associate professors, Honoured Workers of Education of Ukraine, Laureates of State Prizes are working at these departments.

Lecturers of the Faculty work closely with research and educational institutions of Ukraine, Germany, Canada, the USA, Italy, France, Sweden, Israel, Moldova, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland; they carry out research according to grant projects of science foundations. The Faculty is famous for scholar schools established by professors the A. Yu. Kiv, D. Z. Arov, V. M. Pivovarchyk, A. O. Briukhanov, O. R. Gokhman and others.

The Faculty of Music and Choreography

The Faculty of Music and Choreography has rich traditions and considerable experience in training competent teaching staff in the sphere of artistic education. Since 1 September, 1966, it has become one of the most important centres for children and youth’s aesthetic education, development of research on the issues of music and choreographic education, art history, artistic culture.

There are four departments at the Faculty: the Department of Music Art and Choreography, Musical and Vocal Theory, Music and Instrumental Training, Conductor and Choral Training, where 7 Doctors of Sciences, professors and 22 Candidates of Sciences, associate professors, including 2 People’s Artists of Ukraine, 4 Honoured Artists and Honoured Workers of Ukraine, are working.   

Students get Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in the main field of study “Music Education”, “Secondary Education (Music Art)” and “Secondary Education (Choreography)” with specializations in “Artistic Culture” and “Directing Mass Music and Educatory Events”. The graduates obtain the qualification of a music art teacher (teacher of vocal and musical instruments as well as conductor and choral, musical historical and theoretical disciplines) as well as a choreography teacher. Highly professional preparation of students in various forms of creativity is confirmed by the results of international and national contests, festivals and academic competitions. Every year the students take part in creative competitions and win about 40 prizes.

About 60 international students from China, Iran, Ecuador, Turkey, etc. are educated at the Faculty. The Faculty lecturers are annually involved into academic exchange programmes for giving master-classes, participating in research and practice conferences and music forums in Greece, Germany, Poland, France, Finland, Belorussia, Moldova and other countries. Some lecturers showed their mastery in South Korea, Italy, Germany, Croatia, etc.    

The graduates interested in and capable of research have an opportunity to take a postgraduate course. The Faculty staff with their creative capacity make it possible to deal with the issues of educational process modernization and further development of the Faculty, which requires balanced combination of best traditions of domestic music and choreographic teacher education with best examples of European educational system. The Faculty team is ready to accept new approaches, to implement innovative technologies and to update training specialists of artistic education in the context of integration into the European and World Education Space.

The Faculty of Arts and Graphics

The development of art pedagogical education in Ukraine began in 1965 with the opening of the Faculty of Arts and Graphics at the university. Over this period, almost 3,000 teachers of Fine Arts, Technical Drawing and Artistic Labour have been educated.

The oldest and the most important centre for training future teachers of fine arts, technical drawing and technology education in Ukraine provides undergraduate education (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees). There are three departments at the Faculty: the Department of Fine Arts, Theory and Methods of Applied and Decorative Arts and Graphics, and Art Technology and Professional Education.  

Education in the specialties “Fine Arts, Decorative Arts, Restoration”, “Secondary Education (Fine Arts)”, “Secondary Education (Handicraft Education And Technology)”, “Professional Education (Design)” is provided by 9 Doctors of Sciences, professors as well as 30 Candidates of Sciences, associate professors, who are committed to educating qualified specialists, creative personalities with the developed sense of taste, profound knowledge and mastery. Specialist disciplines are taught by qualified lecturers together with distinguished artists, members of All Ukraine Association of Technological and Vocational Education, members of National Commonwealth of Artists of Ukraine, who pass their creative experience gained throughout the years alongside with professionalism and mastery of outstanding Odesa school of painting.

The Faculty of Arts and Graphics collaborates with similar educational institutions of Europe, the USA and Canada; works closely with the Clausthal University of Technology (Germany); the educational research and information centres of Turkey, Israel and Confucius Institute (People’s Republic of China) are involved into the educational process of the Faculty.     

The Faculty organises international and interregional creative and research projects. The lecturers study topical issues of the theory of fine and decorative arts, methods of artistic and art technology education, theory and practice of educational process management; take part in international, all-Ukraine, regional art exhibitions, forums, symposiums, conferences on a regular basis. The students represent the Faculty honourably at regional, all-Ukraine and international exhibitions; show excellent results at creative contests, academic competitions; master extra specialisations in order to be competitive in the contemporary artistic and educational space.
