In early June, archaeological practice officially started for first- and second-year students of the Faculty of History and Philology — and it started not just interestingly, but excitingly! Under the leadership of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor I.V. Bruiak and Assistant Professor of the Department of History of Ukraine V.I. Vodka, young researchers set off for the Izmail district of Odesa region. The place of their expedition is a multi-layered archaeological site near the village of Orlivka.
The first day of practice turned out to be rich and informative. The morning began with a sightseeing tour of the ancient settlement of Kartal. The students climbed the legendary Kamiana Gora — it was here that in ancient times there was a Roman fortress that controlled an important crossing over the Danube. Incredible landscapes and a sense of touch with deep history inspired everyone.
Then — to the point. D.I. Bruyak Ihor Viktorovych demonstrated the method of delineating the boundaries of a future archaeological excavation. In particular, the students had the opportunity to apply in practice the principle of constructing a right angle using an Egyptian triangle - a classic approach, time-tested.
The next step was to remove the upper sod layer - painstaking but necessary work. After that, the excavation began to stand out clearly against the background of the motley Bessarabian grasses, and the site itself - to turn into a real platform for historical discoveries.
Tired, but inspired and happy, the students returned to the practice base, where their colleagues were already waiting for them with a fragrant and nutritious lunch prepared in advance.
Ahead are new days, full of challenges, finds and an exciting immersion in the past. Let us wish the students and their mentors inexhaustible energy, interesting discoveries and real pleasure from research work!
